Particulate Signals explores the role of material techniques in the production of buildings. Looking specifically at concrete through the study of its material and construction history, records of science experiments, construction manuals and timelines, the project investigates alternative modes of material representation that are based not on outward appearances but inherent logics. This, in turn, informs a methodology where a gravity engine and a “home-made CNC machine are paralleled to visualize concrete’s intrinsic properties (particularity, fluidity, solidity) but also to rehearse its already-standardized processes of assembly( sorting, pouring, forming).
